New NAS Markets Revealed with New 7800 Family – Performance Doubles

Consumer NAS Router/GatewayThe new PLX NAS 7800 family tackles two separate challenges in today's market. First, two of the SoCs -- the NAS 7820 and NAS 7821 -- bring to market the highest-performance solutions at the absolute lowest cost, making NAS more attractive in the home as a central, powerful storage platform. Second, the top-end NAS 7825 version enables higher levels of integration and functionality, thus supporting new markets for NAS, including routers/gateways, DVRs, and set-top boxes, each of which take advantage of PLX's unique hardware and software platform.

Industry's Lowest-Power, Dual-SATA RAID DAS Storage Controller w/ Real-Time Encryption

OXUFS946DSE Usage DiagramThe new PLX OXUFS946DSE is the industry's lowest-power (391mW), highest-performance dual-storage controller that bridges two SATA hard disks with eSATA, FireWire800 or USB 2.0 serial interfaces. OXUFS946DSE dual-port RAID controller solution also offers on-the-fly encryption/decryption to protect data. The OXUFS946DSE enables OEMs to provide differentiation in the consumer direct attached storage (DAS) market through innovative new features and powerful software solutions.

PCI Express Switches Empower I/O Virtualization

Hearst Electronic ProductsSystem designers' interest in virtualization continues to grow. The industry in general sees the need for virtual systems and understands the advantages: lower overall cost of a data center through reducing the number of I/O devices, resulting in higher efficiency and lower power and cost.

On this front, the PCI-SIG has defined virtualization technology based on PCIe (SR-IOV and MR-IOV). Industry leaders such as PLX Technology, whose PCIe Gen2 product portfolio supports ACS and ARI, are developing PCIe switches that take full advantage of emerging I/O virtualization technology.

Why PCIe-Based Systems Need Multicast

EE TimesTraditional PCI Express (PCIe) systems have relied only on unicast packets. This made sense as there was only one host at any given time and most of the communication was host-centric, i.e. the host communicated with all the endpoints one at a time. Few applications had peer-to-peer communication, but this communication was also routed through the host due to limitations in some vendors' PCIe switches.

Lately, however, systems have been developed that use multiple hosts and have multiple endpoints requiring simultaneous communication. Additionally, as PCIe technology is being used in telecommunications and embedded systems, along with the graphics, server and storage markets, the need grew for communication with more than one endpoint at the same time. In these applications, multicast is extremely useful.

PEX 8647 Provides High-Performance Dual-GPU Connectivity on AMD's Ultra-High-End ATI Radeon HD 5970

ATI Radeon HD 5970 dual-GPU graphics cardPEX 8647 PCIe Gen 2 switch is the high-performance, peer-to-peer connectivity solution on the new premium ATI Radeon HD 5970 dual-GPU graphics cards from AMD (NYSE: AMD). The innovative ATI Radeon HD 5970, recently released and targeting extreme gamers, offers superior graphics execution via the industry's fastest video card. The powerful ATI Radeon HD 5970 utilizes two GPUs on a single board, which are enabled by PLX's PEX 8647 switch technology and further enhanced with ATI CrossFireX technology.

PLX Completes First Design on Advanced 40nm Process Technology

Advanced 40nm Process TechnologyPLX strengthened its industry leadership position by finishing a new design on 40nm process technology at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (TSMC). This major achievement creates new opportunities for designers looking to reap the benefits of differentiation using PLX's well-known leading performance, low power and custom software tools. PLX is taking advantage of the 40nm geometry to develop a variety of new solutions over the next few years, including PCI Express Gen 3 switches.

PLX Delivers Reliable, Power-Saving Performance in Fujitsu and SUN SPARC Enterprise M3000 Servers

FujitsuTwo PLX PCIe ExpressLane switches are delivering high-performance connectivity in the new SPARC Enterprise® M3000 servers. The dual PLX PEX 8533 switches provide the M3000 with the crucial interface between four Gigabit Ethernet ports, four 8-lane PCIe slots and a SAS port, thus allowing high-speed serial communication within and outside the servers.

PLX Launches Industry's Highest Port-Count PCI Express Switches for Communications Market

PEX 8636 Usage DiagramTwo new PCIe Gen 2 switches designed with 24 ports, the most in the industry, to meet the connectivity demands of complex communications systems. The new PLX ExpressLane PEX 8625 (24 lanes, 24 ports) and PEX 8636 (36 lanes, 24 ports) switches are supported by visionPAK™ the market's only software suite of system debug tools, evaluation and signal-integrity utilities.

A key feature of the PEX 8625 and PEX 8636 is the ability to multicast, which increases the efficiency in communications platforms as it allows each host to communicate to all endpoints at the same time. Another leading attribute of the new switches is the multi-host feature. Multi-host switches provide multiple upstream ports to connect to several CPUs, thereby reducing the number of system components and minimizing latency.
